Fact-check #1: Mexico Agrees To Pay For Wall?

Fake or Fact

I decided to fact check a tweet I saw posted on Twitter by @dalesviews that states “BREAKING: Mexico Agrees To Pay For Wall”. The tweet also included a link, so I clicked on the link and it took me to the original website.Screen Shot 2017-09-13 at 3.27.14 PMThe article basically relayed the message that Mexico would pay for the wall as well as build the majority of it. It includes some pictures such as: a generic photo that had the words “BREAKING NEWS”, pictured in the tweet above, and a Chihuahua with an America flag hat on. These photos can be found anywhere on the internet and do not make the article seem authentic. The website is entitled Americas last line of defense and is full of fake news. The article was posted on February 19, 2017 and the author listed is Flagg Eagleton. Screen Shot 2017-09-13 at 3.21.24 PMAlthough it may seem reliable that an author is listed if you continue to navigate the website and click on the “About US” section of the website it is clearly stated that their sources are not real and images could be altered. The disclaimer in the About Us section reads as followed: “DISCLAIMER: The Resistance may include information from sources that may or may not be reliable and facts that don’t necessarily exist. All articles should be considered satirical and any and all quotes attributed to actual people complete and total baloney. Pictures that represent actual people should be considered altered and not in any way real.”. Due to the original site being an unreliable source the information in the article can not be viewed as facts.

Fact-check #2: Obama serving meals in Texas?

Serving Facts

I found a tweet that went viral on August 26, 2017 of Obama serving meals to the victims of Hurricane Harvey. Screen Shot 2017-09-14 at 1.31.01 PMI went upstream by googling this post and found information on sites such as Western Journalism and CNN. CNN is a known reliable website that leads to the conclusion that this image was actually taken at a homeless center in 2015 on Thanksgiving. To investigate further i found that this post has been fact check on Politifact. The author of the Politifact post, Manuela Tobias, said that the picture was in fact from Thanksgiving 2015 and they stated “Benjamin issued an apology on Aug. 28, 2017”. So due to going upstream, previous fact checking, and the apology from the author this tweet is proven to be false.
